Emotional, physical or sexual abuse can have a powerful and lasting impact on a person’s life and may severely limit his or her capacity to develop self-belief, self-worth and personal confidence.  The person may find it difficult to be assertive with other people and may often compromise on his or her own needs or desires.

Children are vulnerable when they are young and in need of nurture, guidance and loving support from responsible adults in the environments within which they grow up.  Where they experience abusive behaviour, whether physical sexual or emotion, this may have a significant and lasting affect on their capacity to trust others and to allow them to be close.  They may resort to using alcohol or drugs instead or develop a disordered relationship with food or sex.  It is probable that they may feel lonely and distanced from others, even when they are in relationships.  They may carry a deep sense of shame or guilt and hold very low regard for themselves.

In cases of historical abuse where a victim has developed chronic anxiety, panic and/or depression in adult life, it is possible that past events are beginning to surface.   Where emotional responses to past events are intense, this energy can often be reduced or released through energy medicine techniques such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy) or EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).  At The Hove Counselling Practice, we use EFT as a trauma treatment within an integrative therapy approach and can discuss this with you should you wish to book an appointment for trauma counselling.
